5 tips: how to get the most out of coaching sessions

Coaching has become a super tool for professionals seeking career growth and personal transformation in the workplace. But how do you get the most out of coaching? What can you do to maximise the value of your executive coaching sessions?

As an expert professional coach myself, I invite you to keep these five tips in mind, when we start a transformative coaching journey together.

Come up with some achievable goals

Before your first session, take some time to reflect on what you truly want to achieve and what areas of your work life most need looking at. In other words, you need to carry out a self-assessment using SMART goals as a blueprint: they should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Our sessions will revolve around these targets and we can even refine or readjust them if needed as you progress.

Always be honest

We will spark the best connection if it’s built on trust, vulnerability, and meaningful conversation. So prepare to share your experiences with true transparency. That way I’ll be able to peel back the layers and get to the root of the problem.

Remember…I’m not here to judge. Chances are I’ve experienced the same feelings.

Wondering if I’m the coach for you? I’ve written a handy guide of top skills every business advisor, like me, should have.

Put our words into action

I’ll do everything I can to push you in the right direction, but ultimately it’s your responsibility to implement suggested strategies. Take ownership of any setbacks and empower yourself with a positive can-do mindset – because I already know you can.

Embrace feedback with grace

Feedback is a major pillar in the executive coaching process, as it allows me to offer valuable insights into your biggest strengths, blind spots and areas of improvement (I don’t like the word weakness).

Try to be as receptive as possible to my constructive guidance as it will allow you to gain a new perspective on your thoughts and behaviours.

Self-reflection is key.

Stay committed after our sessions

Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to long-term professional growth. I see firsthand that the best results come when the coachee remains indefinitely committed to self-discovery, even once our executive coaching sessions come to an end.

I’ll provide you with an expert toolkit for endless ongoing progress – then it’s down to you to keep the momentum going with patience and dedication.

What does my executive coaching process look like?

No two coaching journeys are the same. Everyone has their own unique set of challenges and aspirations. However, my executive coaching process takes a three-step journey:

  • Goal setting: Initial assessment with clear objectives put in place.
  • One-to-one sessions: Regular calls and meet-ups where goals are put into action.
  • Progress tracking: Ongoing check-ins and detailed reports.
